In different parts of the world Christmas can be celebrated in different ways than ours and that is that in each place there are different traditions and customs. But how is it celebrated in Mexico?
The beautiful Christmas in Mexico and its celebration
- Christmas in Mexico is somewhat longer than in Spain, here it is celebrated from December 24 to January 6 approximately, since there it is from December 12 to January 6. From December 16 until the night of Christmas Eve on December 24, the children carry out processions or “Posadas”. There are nine Posadas in total these days, where the Christmas story where José and María looked for a place to stay is explained. The exterior of the houses decorated with trees, moss and paper lanterns is used.
- In these festivities a game is played during the Posadas which is the piñata. A piñata is a papier-mâché element that is decorated with lights and hung from a tree or ceiling. It is decorated as a ball with seven points that represent the seven deadly sins, although it can also be represented by a bird or a donkey.
- In some states the children of Mexico wait for Santa Claus to arrive on December 24, but in the south the children wait for the arrival of the Epiphany on January 6, which is like Three Kings Day in Spain. On Christmas Eve, also known as Nochebuena, it is a family day and people usually take part in the finale of the Posadas, and then in the evening they gather to eat the main Christmas meal. At midnight many people go to the Misa del Gallo and fireworks are made to celebrate Christmas.
